DemSupport: A Post-Diagnostic Support Clinic for Dementia

Understanding Dementia and the Need for Post-Diagnostic Support
Dementia is a progressive condition that affects memory, thinking, behaviour, and the ability to perform daily activities. Beyond medical treatment, it deeply impacts families who often struggle to understand the condition and manage the changing needs of their loved one.
While receiving a diagnosis is an important first step, what families truly need thereafter is ongoing guidance, reassurance, and support to plan care and maintain quality of life.
Recognizing this crucial gap, NIMHANS and Dementia India Alliance (DIA) have come together to establish DemSupport, a dedicated post-diagnostic support clinic for persons with dementia and their caregivers.

Counselling after dementia diagnosis

About DemSupport

Located at the Geriatric Unit, Psychiatric Specialty block, NIMHANS, the DemSupport clinic offers comprehensive, person-centred, and family-focused care following a dementia diagnosis. It helps families navigate the journey ahead through professional counselling, caregiver training, and linkages to welfare and community resources.

Services are provided both in-person and online, by appointment, and families may self-refer or be referred by doctors, hospitals, or NGOs. The clinic is supported by a team of trained mental health professionals.

Services Offered

1. Post-Diagnostic Care Planning

Each family receives a detailed assessment and counselling session after diagnosis.

An individualized care plan is developed, focusing on maintaining daily functioning, managing behavioural symptoms, and meaningful engagement. Families are guided on understanding disease progression and home care strategies.

3. Caregiver Support and Empowerment

Monthly caregiver support group meetings provide a safe space to share experiences, learn coping strategies, and receive professional guidance.
Individual and family counselling sessions are also available to promote emotional wellbeing and reduce stress.

5. Guidance on Welfare and Legal Matters

Families receive information and assistance with disability certification, pensions, and other government welfare schemes.

Advisory support is also provided on legal guardianship and related processes.

2. Family Caregiver Training

Structured training programs equip caregivers with essential skills in communication, safety, behavioural symptom management, safety, activities of daily living (ADLs), and self-care for caregivers.

Training is available in different languages, supported with printed and audiovisual materials, and conducted through interactive sessions both at the centre and online.

4. Dementia Support Volunteering

The clinic trains community volunteers and students to assist in dementia care. Volunteers participate in awareness drives, home visits, and community outreach—helping extend dementia-friendly care and support into the community.

Together for a Dementia-Friendly Future

Through DemSupport, NIMHANS and Dementia India Alliance aim to make the post-diagnosis journey less overwhelming and more supported for both persons living with dementia and those who care for them.
